As part of a visual communications project, Lauren Bugeja has created semi-wordless image-driven recipes for pancakes and chocolate cake. (Via digg.)


Interesting, but would those recipes be intelligible to someone not already familiar with baking? Not that a wordy recipe is necessarily any better.

I once got an origami diagram for a unicorn, with directions in Dutch. Between my knowledge of standard origami diagramming conventions and my smattering of reading German (veryvery basic), I could figure out what to do.
OTOH, I’ve had trouble following diagrams with Japanese instructions. I think the diagramming uses different conventions than I’m used to, but I’m not sure.
And, then, there’s the origami with plain English instructions that leaves me flustered. Sometimes it’s the diagramming and instructions. I recall one guy explaining to us that we should ignore steps 8 and 9, because he screwed them up, and that part of step 10 wasn’t right… But sometimes, it’s me.
